1920s–30s Racing Excitement at Phillip Island — Australia’s 1st GP Cup

The excitement of racing machines gripped Australia in the 1920s. Technology was advancing at a rapid pace, and British and American brands were expanding rapidly into the Australian market. One such brand was B.S.A. (the Birmingham Small Arms Company Ltd — started in 1861 as a gun maker), stocked in Melbourne by the Finlay Bros. store at 322 Elizabeth Street.

Racing in Victoria had been happening on public roads, but by the late 1920s dedicated circuits were being developed. Phillip Island became the venue for Australia’s first true Grand Prix — a landmark in Australian motorsport history.
