Brian Kemp — Local Master-Potter
Brian Kemp was an esteemed Australian potter renowned for his contributions to ceramics, particularly in the Bellarine Peninsula region near Geelong. In 1969 he completed a Diploma of Art and Design (Ceramics) at the Gordon Institute of Technology, then further honed his craft by studying under Haruki Okishio at Minato Kama in Kurashiki, Japan, for three years.
Upon returning to Australia, Kemp established Koyama Pottery in Wallington, near Geelong, in 1975. During the 1980s he authored two books on fibre-kiln glazes in collaboration with Port-O-Kiln (Aust.) Pty. Ltd., reflecting his dedication to advancing ceramic technique. In the 1990s he taught at the Ceramics Department of the National Institute of Education in Singapore before resettling in Wallington in 1997.
His works are typically marked with an impressed ‘K’. Kemp’s pottery has been featured in various exhibitions including the Geelong Art Gallery, highlighting his influence in the regional art scene. Collectors continue to seek his distinctive Wallington works.
